This beginners guide to natural face oils explains how to use them and what oils will suit your skin type. Jenny Cupido, Founder of Supernatural Beauty is fanatical about face oils and their skincare benefits:
Skincare benefits of natural face oils
Face oils are so powerful they act as an all in one toner, serum, and cream. A natural face oil will re-balance and tone skin. As a result, oils prevent wrinkle formation and enable long lasting moisture retention in just a few little drops.
Pure, natural face oil containing only plant oils is a potent active ingredient as there is no water, synthetic or filler to dilute it. Natural face oil blends do not need preservatives, although vitamin E and essential oils are often added to help keep the oils fresher for longer.
Beginners guide to using a face oil
So often when I talk about moisturising my face with oil I get bombarded with “So what do I DO with it?” And with all these benefits it can be a little confusing as to which “step” you use it in your skincare routine. So here’s your cheat sheet:
- The most effective way to use a natural face oil is to apply it to clean, damp skin. Having a little water or facial mist on your skin helps the oil absorb better into your skin and retain moisture for longer.
- Most face oils come in a dropper bottle with a pipette – all you need is a few drops on the tips of your clean fingers. Don’t over do it!
- Warm the oil on your fingertips and massage into your face and neck.
- Apply a natural face oil in the morning after cleansing or use your oil to deeply nourish as an overnight treatment. Find out what time of day works best for your skin.
For dry skin, you can have fun experimenting with face oils. I use our Salvation Face Oil which contains a rich blend of 16 organic oils. Macadamia, Baobab and Tamanu oils improve collagen production, elasticity and diminish wrinkles.
For combination or oily skin types look for more lightweight ‘dry’ oils such as Camellia and Rosehip found in our Redemption Face Oil. These oils absorb quickly into the skin, helping to balance and even skin tone.
For very sensitive skin types, look for face oils with no or a very gentle fragrance such as lavender and always do a patch test first.
Listen to your skin
Face oils can benefit every skin type, but listen to your skin to know which oils work for you. No two face oils are created equal, so get to know your ingredients. Some plant oils are comedogenic (pore blocking) and can sit on the top of your skin, like olive or castor oil. These oils are mostly used as cleansers, amongst other things.
But then there are the lightweight, nutrient rich oils that come in all different colours and shades. The right blend of botanical oils can deliver high impact results allowing you to say goodbye to harsh and synthetic ingredients.
