Sami, a self confessed self care specialist, nature seeker and herbal tea addict lets us into the secret of self love and how to embrace it for ourselves…..
Sami Blackford is the Founder of Freyaluna skincare and on a mission to help us ‘fall in love with taking care of ourselves’.
Self love. Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months (and years) you’ll know that self love is where it’s at. And it’s the dream, isn’t it, to love every aspect of yourself and your body. But sometimes “you just need to love yourself” is easier said than done. So how do we get there?
It’s not about the big gestures. It’s not about the “losing ten pounds”, or the “looking ten years younger”, or the “getting a butt like Kim’s”.
Think of any loving relationship – with your partner, your friends, your family – and what do you notice? What makes them loving isn’t the delivery of 100 perfect red roses, or the surprise trip to Paris (though that’s good, too – I’ve never been known to turn down a trip to Paris).
No, what makes a loving relationship is the little things done every day. And self love is exactly the same.
Self love is about CHOOSING to love yourself and your body every day.
And how do you do that? By treating yourself with care and kindness and respect. Every. Damn. Day. And that’s where self care comes in.
To me, there are two sides of self care:
- The big, real, raw and radical self care of always putting yourself first in any situation – super important and don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise
- The gentler self care that comes from caring for yourself and your body with rituals and practises to support your wellbeing – in my mind, if it makes me feel good, then it’s classed as self care
If you’re not sure how to go about self care, here are seven simple ideas to get you started…
Clean your face every evening – whether you’ve been wearing make-up or not, cleaning your face every evening means that your body and skin can get important repair work done while you sleep, without having to first deal with all the build-up on the surface of your skin.
Dry skin brush every morning – I honestly cannot rate skin brushing highly enough, it has so many benefits and takes just two minutes before your morning shower.
Choose a salad for lunch – we all know the saying “you are what you eat” and it’s true. Your body uses the food you eat as the building blocks for your cells, tissues and organs. Choose quality materials and get quality results.
Choose the mouth-watering chocolate cake for dessert – because it’s about getting the right balance.
Put on your favourite song and dance around the room – enjoy the music, move your body, increase your heart-rate… there’s so much good stuff going on in this simple act. And, most importantly, dancing helps you to reconnect with your body and how it feels and moves.
And sing along at the top of your voice – purely for the joy of it. Plus, singing helps to clear stale air from your lungs and so revitalises your body with fresh oxygen.
Greet yourself each morning – get out of bed, look at yourself in the mirror, and say “good morning Gorgeous, have a wonderful day”. Because it is all too easy to focus on the things we don’t like about ourselves, this helps to flip the switch and change the conversation going on in our head.
